Jos is set to host the first-ever NPFL Super Six Invitational Pre-Season Tournament, with the fixtures for the six-team competition now confirmed ahead of the tournament’s commencement on Wednesday, August 19 at the Jos New Stadium.
The tournament brings together three of Nigeria’s continental representatives Rangers International, Rivers United and El-Kanemi Warriors alongside Katsina United and Plateau State clubs Plateau United and Mighty Jets.
The competition was initially expected to feature Shooting Stars, but the Ibadan-based club was disqualified after arriving in Jos with its Under-19 team instead of the senior squad. Katsina United were subsequently invited to replace them.
Plateau United will open their campaign against Rivers United at the Jos City Stadium at 2pm on Matchday One, while El-Kanemi Warriors will face Mighty Jets at 4pm.
On Matchday Two, Katsina United will take on El-Kanemi Warriors at 2pm, while Rangers International face Rivers United at 4pm.
The final group-stage fixtures will see Plateau United face Rangers International at 2pm, while Mighty Jets take on Katsina United at 4pm.
The tournament will be played in a two-group format, with the six teams divided into Groups A and B. Each team will play two group-stage matches, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
The semi-finals will see the winner of Group A face the runner-up of Group B, while the winner of Group B will take on the runner-up of Group A. The winners will meet in the final, while the losing semi-finalists will contest the third-place match.
For Jos, the tournament represents a significant moment as the city hosts the NPFL Super Six for the first time, bringing some of the country’s leading clubs to Plateau State for a week of high-level pre-season football.
Rangers International and Rivers United will also use the tournament as part of their preparations for their respective CAF Champions League campaigns, while El-Kanemi Warriors will prepare for continental football after winning the President Federation Cup.
Plateau United and Mighty Jets will provide the local representation as they test themselves against some of the country’s top sides on home soil.
