Rangers International have been crowned champions of the maiden edition of the 2026 NPFL Invitational Pre-Season Super Six after defeating Plateau United 1-0 in the final at the New Jos Stadium on Sunday.
Justice Akugre’s 28th-minute header proved decisive as the reigning NPFL champions held off a determined second-half fightback from Plateau United to lift the trophy.
The final began as a tightly contested affair, with both sides cautious in possession and few clear-cut chances created in the opening stages.
Rangers eventually broke the deadlock in the 28th minute when Akugre rose highest to head home from a dangerous corner, with Plateau United unable to deal with the delivery.
Plateau United responded with greater urgency after the break and came close to an equaliser in the 48th minute, but Rangers goalkeeper Lateef Ishola produced an excellent save to deny Mbaalisa Andrew.
The hosts continued to pile on the pressure, winning successive corners and creating several opportunities as the second half progressed.
However, Plateau United lacked the bite in attack to turn their pressure into a goal. Despite spending long periods in Rangers’ half, the hosts struggled to produce the decisive final pass or clinical finish needed to break down the Rangers defence.
Plateau United also had penalty appeals waved away in the 68th minute before another spell of pressure saw a fierce effort blocked and a subsequent attempt flash wide.
Rangers remained compact and disciplined until the final whistle, managing their advantage effectively to secure the trophy.
The victory underlines why Rangers are the reigning NPFL champions, showing composure, defensive organisation and greater efficiency in the decisive moments.
Mighty Jets Claim Third Place
Earlier, Mighty Jets FC secured third place after defeating Katsina United 1-0.
Tochukwu Ibedu scored the only goal of the match in the 39th minute to give the hosts victory and a podium finish.
