Plateau State, a land of immense beauty and rich cultural heritage, has long been a hidden gem in Nigeria’s tourism industry. However, with the current administration’s efforts to revitalize the sector, the state is fast becoming a top destination for travelers seeking unique experiences. From its stunning natural landscapes to its vibrant cultural attractions, Plateau State is a treasure trove of wonders waiting to be explored.

A New Era of Tourism Development
Under Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, Plateau has entered a promising phase of tourism revival. The administration is deliberately reawakening landmarks that once defined the region’s elegance, crafting a narrative of heritage and modernity in one.
A premier example is the Hill Station Hotel in Jos, born in 1938 and once graced by Queen Elizabeth II. After years of fading charm, the state’s investment arm (PIPC) inked a head-of-terms agreement with Strom Infrastructure Investment & Management to breathe new life into this historic jewel. With an N8.5 billion budget, the plan is to lease, refurbish, and manage the hotel, creating about 160 direct jobs for citizens and other countless indirect opportunities—expected to generate roughly N8.6 billion through its ripple effect.
Work started in March 2025, and the hotel is expected to reopen before the end of the year. It will be modern in design but still keeping its old colonial charm.

The government’s commitment doesn’t stop there. Upgrades to inner-city roads, improved broadband access, better electricity supply, and ongoing work on the Abuja–Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi highway are enhancing both tourism experience and overall investment climate in Plateau.

Historic Landmarks Reawakened

The Hill Station Resort sits at the heart of Plateau’s renaissance narrative. It is not just a hotel, but a bridge between yesterday’s elegance and tomorrow’s promise. Its transformation symbolizes Plateau’s intention to merge legacy with luxury.

Landscape Beautification & Safety Enhancements
The newly installed streetlights and beautifully adorned roundabouts are reshaping Jos’s identity. Making it modern, inviting, and safe. Although most of these beautifications are still in process, their impact is already visible in the city’s growing ambiance.

Leisure Destinations Steeped in Natural Splendor
Rayfield Holiday Resort, remains an idyllic urban escape. It is well equipped with boating, horse riding, and sport fishing on offer. Its daily leisure hours continue to make it a favorite retreat.

Yet, Plateau’s full richness lies beyond the resort:

Adding to this tapestry is Jos Wildlife Park, stretching across eight square kilometers just 5 km from Jos city. Here, exotic and native animals—lions, gazelles, crowned cranes, elephants, hyenas, crocodiles, and more—roam under the care of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation. A cherished spot for eco-tourists and families alike.
Another compelling gem is New Jerusalem in Jos, a serene religious and tourist sanctuary featuring a Ten Commandments monument and a sprawling 5,800-seat amphitheater—welcoming both spiritual retreats and visitor excursions.

Culture That Comes Alive
Adding local flair, Jos is poised to host Miss & Mister Tourism Africa 2025, inviting 30 beauty ambassadors from across the continent. Endorsed by Governor Mutfwang, this event promises to spotlight Plateau’s vibrancy on a continental stage.

Sustainability and Inclusive Growth
While you highlight the State’s sustainability pledge, it’s worth noting that efforts to weave environmental consciousness into tourism are gaining momentum; especially in practices like eco-tourism at Jos Wildlife Park.

Still, challenges persist, nationally and regionally. A recent Guardian analysis notes that Nigeria attracted only around 1.2 million tourists in 2023. This is far below Kenya’s and South Africa’s numbers; due to infrastructure gaps, accommodation shortages, and limited marketing.

But Plateau is choosing to write a different story. One where heritage meets hospitality and modern infrastructure embraces natural charm.

A Bright Future for Tourism
Plateau State’s tourism industry is poised for a bright future. With its rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and commitment to sustainable tourism practices, the state is an attractive destination for travelers. As the state’s tourism sector continues to evolve, it is expected to become a major driver of economic growth and development.
