Plateau state signs renewable energy grant, launches clean cooking initiative

The Plateau State Government has advanced its clean energy agenda with the signing of a renewable energy grant agreement for the state electricity market and the launch of a clean cooking intervention under the Nigerian Energy Support Programme in partnership with GIZ.

Governor Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, represented by the Secretary to the Government, Arc. Samuel Nanchan Jatau, said the “Time Is Now” administration is revamping the power sector as a foundation for industrial growth, noting that the turnover of NESCo has risen from about N700 million to N3.5 billion since 2023 and that professionals are working to replace old turbines and equipment. He described the intervention as timely given the high cost of gas and LPG, and said it will reduce tree felling for firewood while lowering energy costs for households across Plateau.

The Honourable Commissioner for Water Resources and Energy, Hon. Bashir Datti Lawandi, said government has put in place the policy, legal and institutional framework required for a transparent and viable electricity market, and that the clean cooking component aligns with Plateau’s Green Industrial Policy. He assured residents of soon accessing sustainable and affordable energy at home and thanked development partners for their support.

The Honourable Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, was in attendance to communicate government’s direction and ensure citizens understand how the policy translates to better livelihoods. She affirmed that energy remains a priority pillar for the Mutfwang administration because it directly affects homes, businesses and the environment.

Head of Programme, NESP, Garba Joshua, said Plateau was selected for its transparent leadership and will receive up to 600 kilowatts of electricity in three communities through a public-private partnership to drive local enterprise. He also announced the distribution of 5,000 clean cook stoves to 51 communities in nine LGAs and the planting of 2,200 trees to address deforestation and health risks linked to traditional cooking.

The Executive Chairman of Langtang North, Hon. Pirfa Tyem, thanked government for including the LGA, and said traditional rulers and youths have been mobilized to protect facilities while land was secured with proper documentation. He noted that private sector operators will manage the assets through their lifecycle to prevent vandalism.

The District Head Foron/Gwam Rwey Foron, His Royal Highness Da David Bunah Dashing, said rural communities that have lacked power for decades will feel real development from the project.

Grant agreements were signed with Ceesrlar Energy Limited, Husk Power Nigeria Limited and Closed Energy Limited, with support from the European Union and GIZ, to deliver the renewable and clean cooking interventions.
