The 2026 Plateau State Governor’s Cup, tagged the “Mutfwang Solidarity Cup,” is set to begin with the Plateau State Government reaffirming its support for the competition and its role in promoting unity through Solidarity Cup
Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Prince Miaphen, gave the assurance during the draws and Annual General Congress of the Plateau Football Association (PFA), where he described the competition as an important platform for bringing the 17 local government areas together.
Miaphen said his presence at the event was a demonstration of the government’s practical support for the PFA and the Governor’s Cup.
17 LGAs TO BATTLE FOR GOVERNOR’S CUP
The Commissioner called on all 17 local government areas to participate fully in the competition, stressing that the tournament represents more than a football competition.
He specifically confirmed Wase’s participation and described the Governor’s Cup as a symbol of unity among the people of Plateau State.
Miaphen also assured the organisers that he would be present for the opening match and encouraged the PFA to approach his office whenever it encountered challenges during the organisation of the tournament.
He further disclosed that Governor Caleb Mutfwang remains committed to sports development, with the remodelled Rwang Pam Township Stadium expected to be commissioned in November.
The Commissioner added that if Governor Mutfwang is in the state, he would attend the final of the competition.
PFA HIGHLIGHTS IMPACT OF GOVERNOR’S CUP
PFA Chairman, Hon. Dr. Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, welcomed delegates and stakeholders to the Congress and thanked Governor Mutfwang for his continued support for football development in the state
Kwande revealed that the 2026 tournament will be the fourth consecutive Governor’s Cup organised under the Mutfwang administration, with cash prizes already assured for this year’s edition.
He also pointed to the impact of the competition on players, revealing that four footballers who featured in last year’s Governor’s Cup have gone on to secure opportunities with Plateau United and other clubs.
The PFA chairman urged all participating teams to uphold fair play and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
PREVIOUS WINNERS TO REPRESENT PLATEAU ABROAD
Permanent Secretary of the Plateau State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Kenneth Buenyen, highlighted the opportunities created by the Governor’s Cup for young footballers across the state.
Buenyen disclosed that Bokkos and Mangu, winners and runners-up respectively in the previous edition, will represent Plateau State in competitions in Ghana and Togo.
Their respective management teams will also accompany them for the international competitions.
He described Governor Mutfwang as a sports-loving governor who has continued to support youth and sports development in Plateau State.
NFF REPRESENTATIVE COMMENDS PFA
Representing the Nigeria Football Federation, Hon. Yakal Audu Buba (Tigana) commended members of the football family for their support for the Plateau Football Association.
Buba also appreciated Governor Mutfwang’s contribution to football development in the state and wished the Kwande-led PFA a successful tenure.
He stressed the unifying power of football and urged the various Local Football Associations to maintain a strong working relationship with the PFA.
17 LGAs DRAWN INTO FOUR GROUPS
The 17 participating local government areas were divided into four groups for the competition.
Group A: Bokkos, Jos North, Kanke, Kanam
Group B: Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Jos East, Shendam
Group C: Riyom, Qua’an Pan, Pankshin, Mangu
Group D: Langtang South, Mikang, Wase, Jos South, Langtang North
The opening fixture will take place in Mikang Local Government Area, with Langtang South facing hosts Mikang on October 4, 2026.
LANGTANG SOUTH, MIKANG TO KICK OFF COMPETITION
The 2026 Mutfwang Solidarity Cup will officially get underway when Langtang South take on Mikang at 2:00 p.m. on October 4.
With all 17 local government areas set to compete, the tournament will provide another platform for young footballers across Plateau State to showcase their talent while competing for the Governor’s Cup.
