Miango Rest Home: Over a Century of Serenity and Service

Miango Rest Home is a historic and serene retreat center located in the Miango community of

Bassa Local Government Area in Plateau State, Nigeria. Established in 1913 by the Sudan

Interior Missions (SIM), it stands as one of the oldest hospitality centers in the entire country.

The home was originally conceived as a health resort for SIM missionaries seeking rest and

recuperation in the high-altitude, temperate climate of the Jos Plateau.

History and Purpose

The vision for a “Sanitarium” or health resort was championed by Roland Bingham, the Director

of SIM, in 1910. He recognized the need for a place where missionaries could find respite

without the long and arduous journey of returning to their home countries on furlough. Dr.

Andrew Stirrett was tasked with finding a suitable location, and after an extensive search, he

selected Miango for its ideal climate, which is influenced by its elevation of about 3,800 feet

above sea level. Construction began in 1913, and the home has since served as a vital center

for rest and spiritual renewal, not only for missionaries but also for the general public.

A Retreat into Nature

The home is a sanctuary for nature lovers, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle

of city life. The landscape is characterized by an abundance of flowers, trees, and a variety of

birds, creating a calming and refreshing atmosphere. The lush environment provides a perfect

setting for activities like nature walks, miniature golf, and bicycle riding. The vintage setting of

the home, combined with its natural beauty, offers a unique and timeless experience.

Services and Activities

Miango Rest Home provides a range of services aimed at ensuring a comfortable and

rejuvenating stay for its visitors. Guests are offered a variety of Nigerian and continental meals.

The center also provides facilities for conferences and seminars, making it a suitable venue for

group retreats and meetings. In addition to its tranquil setting, the home offers various

recreational activities, including basketball and table tennis, catering to both relaxation and

active recreation. Its Christian roots are still evident, as it remains a popular destination for

those seeking a place for intimate communion with God and a respite from worldly distractions.

Miango and the Irigwe People

Miango Rest Home is located within the territory of the Irigwe people. The Irigwe are primarily

farmers, known for their abundant produce, including a variety of vegetables like carrots,

potatoes, and cabbages. The community is also rich in culture, with a history that includes

unique social systems and traditional practices. While the area has experienced securitychallenges in recent years, the Rest Home has maintained its reputation as a safe and secure

haven, largely due to its secluded nature and dedicated management.

Miango Rest Home is a testament to the enduring vision of its founders, providing a unique

blend of historical significance, natural beauty, and a peaceful atmosphere that continues to

Q attract visitors from all walks of life.
