The Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, has once again reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development, as Plateau athletes returned home victorious from the 22nd National Sports Festival (Gateway Games 2025) held in Abeokuta, Ogun State clinching an impressive array of gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Speaking during a special reception and award presentation ceremony at the New Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos, Governor Mutfwang praised the athletes for their hard work and dedication, describing them as “true ambassadors and shining examples of Plateau’s resilience, excellence, and winning spirit.”
“Our athletes have once again proved that Plateau State remains the home of champions,” the Governor said. “You have brought pride and glory to our dear state through your outstanding performances in gymnastics, athletics, taekwondo, weightlifting, and other sporting events. This is just the beginning of greater achievements ahead.”
In recognition of their exceptional performances, Governor Mutfwang announced generous cash rewards for the medalists ₦1 million for each gold medalist, ₦750,000 for silver, and ₦500,000 for bronze in individual events. For team sports, winners are to receive ₦5 million, ₦3 million, and ₦2 million, respectively.
The Governor emphasized that his administration’s commitment to sports development goes beyond financial incentives. He noted that deliberate steps are being taken to reform existing structures, upgrade facilities, and enhance the welfare of athletes and coaches.
“When we came in, we discovered that some of you had to borrow money to attend competitions. We decided that must stop. Today, athletes receive their allowances and logistics support directly, without interference. This government means business,” he declared.
Governor Mutfwang further revealed plans to transform the Plateau State Sports Council into a Sports Commission to foster stronger partnerships with private investors and open doors for greater local and international participation. He also highlighted the ongoing rehabilitation of Rwang Pam Stadium as a testament to his administration’s vision of providing world-class sporting facilities.
“We are determined to make sports a key driver of youth empowerment, social cohesion, and economic growth. Sports in Plateau will not just be for entertainment, but a strategic tool for peace and development,” he added.
Responding on behalf of the athletes, team captain Mr. Ayuba Wayi Kabiya commended the Governor for his sincerity and support, describing him as “a talk-and-do leader.”
“Your Excellency, for the first time, we received full support for transportation, allowances, and preparations. The transformation we see in the stadium and sports administration today is a reflection of your visionary leadership,” Kabiya said.
Also speaking, the Director of Sports, Prof. Ezra Gunen, expressed deep gratitude to the Governor for his confidence and transparency, noting that the timely release of funds and accountability under the current administration have restored trust among athletes, sponsors, and sports associations.
“For the first time, our athletes received all their entitlements without delay. This marks a new era for sports in Plateau. With the Governor’s vision and commitment, we are reclaiming our place as a hub of talent and excellence,” Prof. Gunen remarked.
The event was graced by government officials, sports administrators, private sponsors, and jubilant athletes all united in celebrating a leader whose steadfast investment in sports and young people continues to produce historic results for Plateau State.
