PLASIEC Releases Timetable for 2026 Local Government Elections in Plateau State

The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has announced that local government elections across the 17 councils of the state will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

This was contained in a statement issued in Jos on Thursday, September 4, 2025, by the Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Plangji Daniel Cishak, who also unveiled the timetable and schedule of activities leading to the polls.

According to PLASIEC, the notice and timetable for the election were released in line with the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2024, the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022.

• Notice of Election/Release of Timetable: September 4, 2025
• Party Primaries: January 12–30, 2026
• Collection & Submission of Nomination Forms: February 2–March 2, 2026
• Publication of Candidates’ Particulars: March 7, 2026
• Screening & Verification of Candidates: March 11–16, 2026
• Publication of Final List of Candidates: March 30, 2026
• Campaigns Begin: March 31, 2026
• End of Campaigns: August 30, 2026
• Election Day: September 1, 2026

The Commission emphasized that the timetable was designed to give political parties sufficient time to conduct their primaries, resolve disputes, and prepare their candidates ahead of the polls.

Hon. Cishak assured that the 2026 local government elections would be free, fair, and credible, while urging political parties, civil society organizations, and the media to cooperate with the Commission to ensure a peaceful process.
