Plateau United and Mighty Jets FC both began their campaigns at the 2026 NPFL Super Six Invitational Pre-Season Tournament with 1-0 victories at the New Jos Stadium on Wednesday.

Plateau United opened the day’s action with a narrow victory over Rivers United, before Mighty Jets followed with another 1-0 win against El-Kanemi Warriors.

Plateau United started brightly but had to remain patient in a tight opening period, with Rivers United initially enjoying more possession before the home side grew into the game.

Rivers United’s first dangerous opportunity came early, but their attacker’s effort was comfortably saved by Plateau United goalkeeper Amah John.

The game was frequently interrupted by fouls, with neither side able to create a clear-cut opportunity in the opening stages.

Plateau United eventually found the breakthrough in the 30th minute after consecutive corner kicks put the Rivers United defence under pressure.

Jubril Ibrahim rose highest from the second delivery to guide a fine header into the back of the net and give Plateau United the lead.

Jubril was replaced by Seitefa Jackson in the 40th minute as Plateau United went into half-time with a 1-0 advantage.

Plateau United came out strongly after the restart and almost doubled their lead in the 50th minute when a quick attack ended with an effort rattling against the post.

They continued to threaten, with Paul Samson seeing his effort brilliantly saved by the Rivers United goalkeeper in the 60th minute.

Another opportunity went begging in the 68th minute when a clever attempt to dink the advancing goalkeeper sailed wide.

Plateau United pushed for a second goal late on, including a dangerous free-kick in the 85th minute that was brilliantly saved by Rivers United goalkeeper Ifeanyi Emmanuel.

Rivers United could not find an equaliser as Plateau United held on for a 1-0 victory and three points.

In the second game of the day, Mighty Jets also started their campaign with a victory after defeating El-Kanemi Warriors 1-0.

Mighty Jets made the brighter start, coming close twice inside the opening nine minutes, while El-Kanemi Warriors’ first attempt in the 14th minute went wide.

Menyanga Usman came close in the 19th minute after brilliantly beating two defenders inside the box, but his effort drifted wide as both sides went into the break level.

The breakthrough came in the 56th minute when Usman produced a fantastic finish to put Mighty Jets ahead.

Mighty Jets continued to create opportunities to extend their lead, with Prince Gobum coming close in the 75th minute.

El-Kanemi Warriors pushed for an equaliser late on, but Mighty Jets held firm to secure a 1-0 victory and three points from their opening Group B fixture.

Both Plateau-based sides therefore begin the inaugural NPFL Super Six with victories.
